You think about how you’d sit this way with your mother when you were younger. This was different, but comforting nonetheless

You close your eyes as gentle fingers press down on your head and make their way from your temples up your scalp. Slipping in between your hair, her palms massage the oil into your head and slowly push your worries away. Time finally seems to slow down. And you thought you wouldn’t get a chance to take a breather all day.

‘So, are you going to tell me what happened today?’ she said. ‘Or are you going to keep it all to yourself?’
‘It’s nothing!’ you say. ‘I’ve just got a lot on my mind, lately.’
‘Boy troubles?’

‘No no! Those come and go. Nothing as trivial as that.’
‘Oh! Really? If memory serves me well; 2 years ago boys were all you could talk about.’
You can hear the amusement in her voice. She’s teasing you.
‘That was then, alright?! I’ve grown up.’
‘Acha? Then tell me, Miss I’m all grown up now - what’s bothering you?’
‘Nothing. I’ll handle it.

She moves her fingers to the sides of your head, just above your ears and starts applying pressure, while she makes a circular movement with her hands. You let out a sigh and finally give in.
‘It’s this new job. I’m not sure I’m ready for it. There’s so much responsibility. And I’m not getting any better at it.’
She pauses. ‘That’s it?’
You turn around and look at her. She’s smiling. She puts her hands back on your head and says, ‘It’s only your first week on the job.’
‘But…’

‘Listen. When I was 23, I started out at my first job. And I was terrified. I thought that I was a failure wanted to leave 3 days into the job. But you know what I did?’
‘You bore the trauma and kept going on until you got so good at your job that they were forced to give you a raise and treat you with respect?’
She laughed and said, ‘Haha. Please! I quit, and got married. Now I’m boss of the boss!’
You roll your eyes and say, ‘So I’m supposed to get married? Is that the solution?’

‘Oh no! No one’s going to marry you. Have you looked in the mirror recently? Which is why you’ve got to keep working at this job thing. You’ll get good at it soon enough. I have faith in you.’
You turn around and playfully hit her on the shoulder. You smile. You think about how you’d sit this way with your mother when you were younger. This was different, but comforting nonetheless. You wonder about when your sister became so wise.

You look back at your sister sitting with the bottle of oil beside her and say, ‘Give me the bottle. It’s your turn.’
