Kavita, a 28-year old first time mom, came to my clinic last week in tears.” My hair is falling out in clumps, doctor,” she said. “My baby is 5 months old and I’m just getting over the stress of sleepless nights, and now I’m stressed about my hair. Why is this happening to me, and what can I do?

Kavita’s situation is not a unique one at all. In fact, most women experience some hair loss after delivery of babies and this is known as telogen effluvium of pregnancy. The reason it happens is very simple. During the last 6 months of pregnancy, the hair tends to move into the resting or catagen phase, to ensure adequate nutrition to the vital organs. Three to six months after delivery of the baby, all of this hair sheds, leading to visible hair fall, akin to Kavita.

Theoretically speaking, telogen effluvium does not require active treatment. So you can keep your mind relaxed, for this is one kind of hair loss which can be corrected with just a little bit of care! Here are some quick tips to tide over this period.

General Measures

Don’t make yourself a last priority, in the craziness of baby nurturing. Spend time at least a couple of times a week oiling your hair with a nourishing coconut based oil for protection and enhancement. Coconut oil moisturises, protects the cuticle and penetrates and strengthens the shaft, making it a great single product for protection.

Focus on your diet, as the right combination of vitamins and minerals can return your hair follicle to its growing state. This is because the early growing follicle needs protein and vitamins to grow at a steady pace and produce a strong hair. Include multicoloured vegetables and multivitamins as they are filled with B complex vitamins and antioxidants. High protein items like eggs, fish and sprouts, as well as omega 3 and iron rich foods like spinach, flax seeds and walnuts are highly beneficial.

Treat your hair gently. Avoid combs or brushes that pull or stress hair, or complicated hair styles and parlour procedures.

Get a good hair cut from a reputed hair dresser which provides volume, such as bangs or side swept styles.

Choose your styling products wisely. Use a natural or sulphate free shampoo and a mild conditioner. Try different styling products that bulk up hair, such as volumizing sprays which swell up individual strands to create volume.

1. When to seek an expert opinion
Sure, some hair loss post pregnancy is normal and universal. But if the hair fall shows no signs of abating, even after 60 days, do see an expert, like a dermatologist.

• Any deficiencies like Iron or Vitamin D3 can be detected by the doctor
• If thyroid, an important hormone is unstable, it can be detected and corrected by the doctor
• Topical stimulants like Minoxidil, can help speed up the process of hair re-growth
