You’ve always loved the crown braid. They look stunning, are easy-to-do, and the best part? They keep your hair out of your face.

The problem? You’re not entirely sure how you can do it.

The Nyishi tribe of Arunachal Pradesh, also known as the Highlanders can lend a helping hand here. Having experimented with this hairstyle for ages, they extend these braided hairstyles extend to both genders. The men go so far as plaiting their hair and securing it to their foreheads, while the women do it with a bit of a twist.

The Highlanders wore the crown braid almost all the time - as we’re sure you will as well. Wear it on a Friday to work, and then accessorise it with tiny flowers to welcome the weekend, and you’re good to go.

Have a look at what is known as the ‘Nyishi Braid.’

Step 1. Make a 2-inch section, as shown. Clip this to the side.

Step 2. Pick up a piece of hair above your left ear, divide it into 2 parts, A and B.

Step 3. Twist Section A and B, together.

Step 4. Pick up a piece of hair, from above your left eyebrow (Section C) adding it to section B.

Step 5. Now twist C and B around section A.  Continue picking up pieces, adding and twisting, till you reach your right ear. Pin the twisted section to the back of your head.

Step 6. Bring the rest of your hair over the right shoulder and braid it.
