It’s such an obvious thing right? You know you are losing hair and that’s why you are seeking help for it. So certainly there is no need for a test, right?

The simple fact of the matter is that, very often, tests are needed to diagnose the type of hair fall, the severity as well as some of the possible underlying causes for the same. Let’s take a quick look at what some of these tests are:

• A detailed history : A doctor will ask you many questions about your hair fall, the duration, presence of family history etc.The doctor will also ask you questions on your diet, lifestyle, stress factors etc which will help determine the underlying reasons for hair loss
• A scalp and hair examination : this will be done both with the naked eye and a magnifying glass
• A trichoscope examination : the doctor might use an instrument called trichoscope which will give images on a monitor of various areas of your scalp and hair
• Hair pull test : To look at easy hair shedding
• A trichogram : A test to see the ratio of different stages of hair
• Blood tests for haemoglobin, iron stores, vitamin B 12 and Vitamin d3
• Blood tests for hormones which include free testosterone,DHT, FSH and LH, S.estrogen and S.progesterone, S.Insulin and Thyroid tests including TSH.
• An USG for polycystic ovaries
• A psychiatric evaluation in extreme cases

This is an indicative list. Depending on your specific condition, more tests may be performed for you. It is  important to understand that tests are an integral part of hair treatment and self medication without response must be avoided, so as to get the required professional help, well in time.
